Studio City II

Studio City II is a landmark integrated casino resort in Cotai, Macau. Sun Young Stone supplied the Rainforest Green marble for its spa and hotel floors in one of the most technically demanding patterns we have produced — a triangular fluted (grooved) floor. Because infrared bridge saws accumulate a tiny error tile after tile, the triangular grooves of neighbouring pieces drift out of alignment when laid together. Our team re-engineered the cutting drawing and dry-laid the entire floor by hand, matching every seam until the fluting ran perfectly continuous, and delivered the order successfully.

Solving the Triangular Fluting Challenge

Studio City II in Macau called for a triangular fluted (grooved) Rainforest Green marble floor — one of the most demanding patterns we have ever produced. Because infrared bridge saws build up a tiny cumulative error from tile to tile, the triangular grooves of neighbouring pieces drift out of line when laid together. Our team re-engineered the cutting drawing and dry-laid the entire floor piece by piece, matching every seam by hand until the triangular grooves ran perfectly continuous. Engineering the Triangular Fluting — Drawing & Dry-Lay

It begins with a numbered cutting drawing that sets a controlled corner offset for every triangle, then the whole floor is dry-laid flat in the factory so the pattern can be proven before anything ships.

Seam-Match Quality Control

Every triangle is checked at the seam — corner offset, groove alignment and joint width — and marked with spacers until the fluting runs continuous from piece to piece.

Studio City II is a major integrated resort in Cotai, Macau. For its spa and hotel areas the designers specified a triangular fluted (grooved) floor in Rainforest Green marble — a striking pattern where each tile is cut into fine triangular grooves that must line up continuously from piece to piece across the whole floor. It is one of the most demanding stone patterns to produce and one our team was proud to take on.

The challenge: cumulative cutting error

The difficulty is precision. The triangular grooves are cut on infrared bridge saws, and like any machine they carry a tiny tolerance on every cut. Across a triangular layout that error accumulates tile after tile, so by the time adjacent pieces are dry-laid together the grooves no longer meet — the triangles visibly shift out of alignment at the seams. For a feature floor read across an entire room, even a fraction of a millimetre of drift per tile becomes obvious.

How we solved it

Our team spent considerable time studying every source of error — the cutting drawing, the saw setup, the groove indexing and the dry-lay sequence. We re-engineered the cutting drawing to set a controlled corner offset for each triangle that cancels out the cumulative drift, tightened the cutting process, then dry-laid the complete floor flat in the factory and seam-matched it by hand, piece by piece, until every triangular groove ran continuous. Only then was the stone numbered and crated. The result is a flawless triangular fluted floor — and a process we can now repeat for other high-precision pattern work.
